Biovoima has successfully supplied five biomethane logistic solutions, BIOlogistic CH4 gas transportation containers to customer Sorpa, Reykjavik´s leading waste management company,. The project was completed ahead of schedule in February 2024, ensuring that Sorpa´s biomethane logistics infrastructure is now more efficient and environmentally friendly than ever.
Smarter, greener biomethane transportation
Biogas upgraded to biomethane needs cost-effective and flexible logistics solutions, especially when transported outside the biogas plant for industrial use, grid injection, or refueling stations. Biovoima’s high-pressure gas transportation containers offer an innovative way to optimize transport, lower operational costs, and reduce environmental impact.
Cutting transport needs by 250% – and reducing emissions
Sorpa’s new biomethane containers significantly improve efficiency. According to Thorleifur Thorbjörnsson, Sorpa’s mechanical and energy engineer, the advanced design of these containers will reduce the need for transportations by 250%, thanks to their higher gas capacity. Fewer transport trips mean lower costs and a substantial cut in emissions, supporting both business goals and environmental sustainability.
Lightweight technology for maximum efficiency
Four of the five containers delivered to Sorpa are made from high-strength fiberglass, a lighter and more cost-effective alternative to carbon fiber. These Type IV gas containers allow for the transport of maximum biomethane volume with minimal weight, enhancing safety while cutting fuel consumption. The remaining container, based on Type I steel cylinders, is ideal for short-distance transport, offering the most affordable investment cost for localized gas logistics.
Strengthening Iceland’s sustainable energy future
Sorpa plays a crucial role in Reykjavik’s waste management and renewable energy ecosystem. By investing in Biovoima’s cutting-edge biomethane transport solutions, Sorpa is setting a new standard for sustainable logistics in Iceland—cutting costs, emissions, and inefficiencies while maximizing the potential of renewable biomethane.
SORPA is owned by six municipalities; Reykjavík, Kópavogur, Hafnarfjörður, Garðabær, Mosfellsbær and Seltjarnarnes. SORPA’s task is to take care of the waste management of the area and thus also fulfill the statutory obligations of the municipalities. It includes the operation of the receiving and sorting facilities, landfill, gas and natural gas facilities, as well as six recycling facilities, which are used under the service agreement with the municipalities.
