Biogas plant Pieksämäki, Finland

The biogas plant commissioned by Pieksämäen Vesi Oy and implemented by Biovoima as a turnkey contract has been commissioned during the summer and autumn of 2023. The biogas plant will use organic sludge from Pieksämäen Vesi's own wastewater treatment plant as raw material and produce biogas for heating and electricity. The population of the economic area covered by the plant in Pieksämäki is about 17 000, which means that the biogas plant can be implemented profitably even with a relatively small amount of feedstock, saving costs related to the previous transport costs of sludge and the energy used by the water treatment plant.

When it reaches full capacity, Pieksämäen Vesi's biogas plant will process 6 000 tonnes of dried wastewater treatment plant sludge and grease trap sludge per year. The biogas produced will be used to produce 100 % of renewable electricity and heat for the waste water treatment plant's own needs, with the excess energy being fed into the electricity and district heating network.
