Membrane technology-based biogas upgrading unit, BIOupgrade, as well as the gas filling station and the high pressure storage facility have now been officially commissioned and handed over to the customer in Latvia. Over the past weeks, the Biovoima project and commissioning team has been carrying out finalisation work at the SIA ZAAO facility, conducting performance tests and training the operators of the facility.
After commissioning and handover, the cooperation with the customer will continue, as the Biovoima's service business BIOservice is responsible for scheduled maintenance during the warranty period. BIOservice supports the customer by ensuring high availability, reliability, efficiency and safety of the equipment and processes, as well as by managing the entire life cycle of the solution.
Biogas upgrading unit and filling station for SIA ZAAO
New biomethane production and use concept BIOupgrade upgrading unit, filling station and the high-pressure storage facility support SIA ZAAO's goals of environmental sustainability, operational efficiency and energy self-sufficiency, producing biomethane in an energy- and cost-efficient manner. With the introduction of the new solutions, waste collection trucks will no longer have to drive far to refuel, but will be able to refuel on their own premises.
ZAAO Development Director Mārtiņš Niklass said earlier in the project that he was happy to work with Biovoima. “We trust Biovoima's expertise in biogas upgrading technology and their professional project execution.”

Thanks to its advanced membrane technology, BIOupgrade offers a scalable biomethane production solution for biogas plants of different sizes. BIOupgrade gas upgrading unit is an automated, easily monitored and remotely controlled refining system, enabling efficient gas refining up to methane concentrations above 99%.
BIOpark gas filling station is a unique solution with the strength of technical scalability and a cost-effective visual structure. The solution is suitable for both large and small transport biomethane distributors, as well as for private fueling stations.
Environmentally friendly biomethane to reduce emissions from ZAAO waste vehicles
ZAAO invests in fossil-free fuel production in its own operations and uses the biomethane produced in its waste collection vehicles to reduce greenhouse gas emissions for a cleaner climate. Mārtiņš Niklass sees several advantages in this investment.
”ZAAO's investment in biogas processing and biomethane refuelling technology reflects its long-term commitment to environmental sustainability, operational efficiency and energy self-sufficiency. The transition to locally produced biomethane will enable ZAAO to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, lower transportation fuel costs and reduce dependence on fossil fuels.”
Biomethane is a much cleaner fuel than fossil fuels. It produces significantly less carbon dioxide emissions and thus helps to reduce the carbon footprint of waste management operations. In some cases, biomethane can reduce CO₂ emissions by up to 80-90 % compared to conventional fossil fuels. By using green fuel, ZAAO is leading the way in the waste management sector in Latvia.
”This project supports the company's aim to lead the green transition in the Latvian waste management sector”, says Niklass.
SIA ZAAO provides quality waste management services - collection, sorting, transport, treatment and disposal of waste in an environmentally friendly way, as well as communication and training.
SIA ZAAO is a public company owned by 11 municipalities: Alūksne, Balvi, Cēsis, Gulbene, Limbaži, Madona, Saulkrasti, Sigulda, Smiltene, Valka and Valmiera.
