Biogas plant in Tallinn, Estonia

Biovoima is strongly involved in the energy transformation of the entire Baltic region, as demonstrated by the implementation of the Maardu biogas plant. The plant, built near Tallinn, will contribute to facilitating the future capacity adequacy of the natural gas network. This first plant in the Baltic region to treat separately collected biowaste was commissioned in spring 2023 and implemented as a joint project by BioWoima Finland. Biowoima Finland is owned by Biovoima (Suomen Biovoima Oy), Prohoc Oy and Wel-Mach Oy. The biogas produced by the EKT Ecobio plant will be upgraded into biomethane, for example for use in Tallinn's public transport system and for injection into the gas network.

  • Beneficiary: EKT Ecobio
  • One of the largest biogas plant projects in Estonia
  • EPC project, contracted by BioWoima Finland Oy
  • EUCO® Titanium plant
  • EUCO® dry digestion technology and COCCUS® wet digestion technology
  • Biogas plant size: 30 GWh of biogas
  • Biogas use: processing into biomethane and feeding into the natural gas grid
  • Digestate use: a high quality, low odour and environmentally friendly fertiliser for agricultural use.
  • Feedstock 24 000 t/year: bio-waste from households and shops
