Foundation stone laid at the Voss biogas plant in Norway

The foundation stone of the biogas plant in Voss, which Biovoiman contracted for BIR AS, has been laid. Construction started just before the summer of 2024, and the plant is scheduled to be completed in autumn next year, reaching full capacity in 2026.

The Biovoima-contracted biomethane plant project is progressing well in its construction phase, and yesterday was one of the significant days: the laying of the foundation stone. Tero Kemppi, project engineer Kati Alén, Commissioning and Planning Manager Aapo Nieminen and Biovoiman Norwegian sales representative, Svein Ringdal.

New standard for biogas plants

Representative of the builder, BIR Øyvind Birkeland has been working on the biogas plant project for several years.

”Today we see the result of several years of planning, two bidding processes and many decisions,” says Øyvind Birkeland. ”One of these decisions, which makes this plant completely unique, is that to our knowledge we are building the world's first BREEAM (Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method) certified biogas plant. Certified construction means, for example, requirements for the use of materials, high sorting and reuse rates. First, of course, we build and apply for certification, but it is clear that BIR is now setting a new standard for how biogas plants can be built.”

Plant produces biomethane and biofertiliser

The biogas plant is the first of its kind in Vestland, Norway, and will produce biogas from biowaste in the region and manure from local farmers in Voss. The plant has a treatment capacity of 54 000 tonnes of organic material per year. Most of the biofertiliser produced in this process replaces the use of cow manure as fertiliser, significantly reducing methane emissions and odours from agriculture. Due to the improved fertilisation properties, this may also reduce the need for fertiliser imports.

The biomethane produced at the plant will be used primarily as a fuel for BIR's heavy-duty vehicles and as an environmentally friendly alternative to fossil natural gas (LNG) for industrial use in and around Voss. In order to use the biogas locally, processes are underway in Voss to set up a refuelling station. Vehicles will literally be powered by local biowaste and cow dung - a perfect example of good application and circular economy value chains in practice.

LAB Entreprenører is the main contractor for the buildings and infrastructure and Biovoima is the turnkey contractor for the biogas plant and related technologies. In addition, several local and regional subcontractors have been and will be engaged in the project.
