Suomen Biovoima Oy has agreed on the construction of a biogas plant with Pieksämäen Vesi Oy. The biogas plant will be built in connection with the wastewater treatment plant located at Kaaritie in Pieksämäki, which provides water supply services to about 18,000 people in Pieksämäki and its surrounding areas. The biogas plant to be built will treat not only the sludge from its own wastewater treatment plant but also sludge from other plants and grease trap sludge. The amount of feedstock for the plant will be around 6000tn/a.
The 100 % of renewable biogas produced by the plant will be used to generate electricity and heat using a combined heat and power (CHP) system. The CHP plant produces 820 MWh of electricity and 984 MWh of heat per year, enough to cover the energy needs of the wastewater plant and the biogas plant, with the possibility of feeding electricity into the grid.

”The plant in Savo will be a big trendsetter for other wastewater treatment plants in terms of biogas plants to be built alongside wastewater plants.” -comments Eero Tilsala from Biovoima.
The treatment residue from the biogas plant, which will be completed by the end of 2022, will be used as fertiliser for agricultural purposes. This will contribute to improving the challenges faced by the agricultural sector in terms of fertiliser costs.
When completed, the plant will significantly improve the energy efficiency of the region in an environmentally friendly way.
”The biogas plant will significantly increase the energy self-sufficiency of the WWTP. We have high expectations for the project.” - comments Matti Laaksonen, Managing Director of Pieksämäen Vesi Oy.
