Estonian President Alar Karis recently visited the EKT Ecobio biogas plant in Maardu, near Tallinn. The President's visit was part of a visit to Northern Estonia. The distinguished guests were shown the plant's operating technology, which uses household biowaste as a raw material for end products, refined biomethane and biofertiliser. During the visit, the situation of recycled materials and the problems of the sector in Estonia were discussed.
”Of course we are honoured by the President's visit, and it is very right that the Head of State is paying attention to issues related to the circular economy. Waste is a resource only if we know how to use it. AS Eesti Keskkonnateenused has invested in recycled materials and will continue to do so - the biogas plant is only a small part of what could and should be done in Estonia from the perspective of recycling waste materials,” said Argo Luude, CEO of AS Eesti Keskkonnateenused, adding that investment needs a stable environment.”
EKT Ecobio The biogas plant in Maardu is unique in Estonia because biomethane is produced from biodegradable waste from households. The total investment in the EKT Ecobio plant amounted to €14 million, of which €3.9 million was investment aid. The biomethane produced by the plant will be used as fuel for gas buses in Tallinn's public transport system. Finland's Biovoima was the contractor for the KVR project as part of BioWoima Finland.
