Pressure reduction station and gas transfer containers, Saint-Gobain Forssa, Finland

Saint-Gobain Finland's Isover factory in Forssa has entered a new era. Biovoima has played a key role in enabling the change. Thanks to the modernisation, the factory started producing glass wool, which has the lowest carbon footprint in the world within the Saint-Gobain Group. The reforms support the Group's goal of achieving net zero emissions by 2050.

Production with completely fossil-free energy

Production at the Forssa plant is now based entirely on renewable energy: 50% of the energy comes from biogas and the rest from hydroelectric power. Since 2010, biogas has been supplied from a local biogas plant via a pipeline, and now the availability of biogas has been further increased by Biovoima with a BIOadapter pressure reduction station, which enables biogas to be received into the plant's process also using gas transfer containers. Biovoima also acted as a supplier of gas transport containers to the Forssa plant.

- Thanks to the installation of three new pressurised biogas tanks and an existing biogas pipeline connection to a local producer, we will soon be moving to a completely carbon-free energy source, says ISOVER's Production Manager Juha Strandberg.

1 500 tonnes less carbon dioxide emissions per year

The investment will reduce the plant's carbon dioxide emissions by up to 1 500 tonnes per year. This will reduce the life cycle carbon footprint of glass wool products by 30-40%.

The environmental impact of the products will be measured and verified through third-party EPDs by the end of 2025. Up to 85 % of the raw material for glass wool manufactured in Forssa is recycled glass, making Saint-Gobain the largest user of recycled glass in Finland.
