The commissioning phase of the biogas plant ordered by Pieksämäen Vesi Oy and contracted by Biovoiman is about to start. During the commissioning process, the biogas plant will receive a ”rye bread root” from another plant already in operation. The ”root”, called the "stump", will bring a ready-made microbial strain to the biogas reactor, which will automatically start to break down Pieksämäen Water's own organic sludge fed into the plant and produce biogas from it. Ympp is brought to Pieksämäki from Kuopio and Mikkeli, both of which already have biogas plants producing biogas from sewage treatment plant sludge.
“The original schedule was somewhat delayed due to a global shortage of automation components, but now that the centre is on site, the installations have been turbocharged. Biological deployment readiness has since been achieved quickly. It is really nice to see how the site is pulling together the client, the main contractor, the subcontractors and the authorities to achieve the common goal!” says the Biovoima project leader on the Biovoima side Tero Kemppi.
When it reaches full capacity, Pieksämäen Vesi's biogas plant will process 6 000 tonnes of dried wastewater treatment plant sludge and grease trap sludge per year. The biogas produced will be used to produce 100 % of renewable electricity and heat for the waste water treatment plant's own needs, with the excess energy being fed into the electricity and district heating network.
