Biovoima has concluded a deal for a biogas plant in Estonia for more than EUR 10 million

Finland's Biovoima Ltd has signed a deal to supply the first biogas plant for biowaste in the Baltic States.

Biovoima has made a significant acquisition of a biogas plant in Estonia worth more than EUR 10 million. The plant will be the first biogas plant in the Baltic States to treat household and commercial biowaste. When completed, the plant will treat a large part of the biowaste in the Tallinn region, producing biomethane for the natural gas network and as a fuel for cars to replace fossil fuels. As a by-product, biofertiliser suitable for soil improvement will also be produced.

Biovoiman Sales Director Jani Kangasaho describes the pre-contractual process as long and multi-stage.

- The project has been running with the client for more than four years, and has seen many ups and downs. Local government permits and financing solutions had to be modified several times, and interest rates added their own delays. The first plant project of its kind in Estonia is a source of enthusiasm for many people and will significantly improve the current waste management situation in the Tallinn region. Along the way, the environmental benefits have had to be justified from many angles. Now that we are finally getting the ball rolling, the feeling is undeniably overwhelming.

The new biogas plant will be ready for operation in 2023

The requirement for separate collection of bio-waste under EU legislation will provide a significant boost to the construction of similar facilities in the Baltic States, as bio-waste has in the past mainly ended up in mixed waste for incineration or landfill.

- We have several similar projects underway in each of the Baltic countries, and it is expected that the next batch of plants will be launched in the near future, announces Kangasaho. At the same time, several projects in the domestic market are also moving towards investment decisions.

Construction of the plant will start immediately and it will be ready for operation in early 2023. When completed, it will be one of the largest biogas plants in Estonia. BioWOIMA Finland Oy, a Jyväskylä-Vasa-based company owned by Biovoima Oy of Finland, Prohoc Oy and Wel-Mach Oy, will be responsible for the construction and supply of the plant.
