Forssa glass wool factory now produces the Saint-Gobain Group's lowest-carbon glass wool - Biovoima technologies play a key role

Saint-Gobain Finland's Isover factory in Forssa has entered a new era. Biovoima has played a key role in enabling the change. Thanks to the modernisation, the factory started producing glass wool, which has the lowest carbon footprint in the world within the Saint-Gobain Group. The reforms support the Group's goal of achieving net zero emissions by 2050.

Production with completely fossil-free energy

The Forssa plant's production is now based entirely on renewable energy: 50 % of the energy comes from biogas and the rest from electricity produced by hydropower. Already since 2010, biogas has been supplied by pipeline from a local biogas plant, and now the availability of biogas has been further increased by Biovoima's supply of BIOadapter -pressure reduction station, which will allow biogas to be received into the plant process also using gas transfer containers. The biovoima plant also gas containers as a supplier to the Forssa factory.

- Thanks to the installation of three new pressurised biogas tanks and an existing biogas pipeline connection to a local producer, we will soon be moving to a completely carbon-free energy source, says ISOVER's Production Manager Juha Strandberg.

- Half of our energy comes from biogas and half from hydropower - a big step towards more sustainable production.

-"This milestone reinforces Saint-Gobain's position as a pioneer in lightweight and sustainable construction and brings us one step closer to our goal of achieving net zero emissions by 2050," says Saint-Gobain Finland's CEO. Olli Nikula.

1 500 tonnes less carbon dioxide emissions per year

The investment will reduce the plant's carbon dioxide emissions by up to 1 500 tonnes per year. This will reduce the life cycle carbon footprint of glass wool products by 30-40%.

The environmental impact of the products will be measured and verified through third-party EPDs by the end of 2025. Up to 85 % of the raw material for glass wool manufactured in Forssa is recycled glass, making Saint-Gobain the largest user of recycled glass in Finland.

- We at Biovoima are very happy and proud to be part of this important project as a technology solution provider. Saint-Gobain's Forssa plant is leading the way, setting an example to the rest of the Group and the industry on how biogas can be used to concretely reduce emissions and promote the industrial transition towards fossil-free production," says Mikko Bengts, Sales Manager at Biovoima.

- It has been great to be a partner in Isover's green transition. Saint-Gobain's Forssa plant has led the way in reducing emissions and has been using local biogas from the Nevel biogas plant in its processes for years. Now the journey will culminate with the Forssa plant switching to fossil-free fuels," says Jyrki Eurén, Senior Manager at Nevel Oy.

- Saint-Gobain serves as an example and inspiration for the choices an industrial operator makes for the environment. Pirkanmaan Jätehuolto is honoured to be involved in enabling Saint-Gobain's sustainable choices and supplying biomethane to the Forssa factory," says Elina Tiira, Technical Manager, Pirkanmaa Waste Management.
